Happy Birthday, Emperor Akihito!
Residents of Tokyo and visitors to the Japanese city will once again be given an opportunity to wish happy birthday to the emperor on December 23rd this year.
The emperor's birthday is a national holiday in Japan and the current holder of the position is Emperor Akihito, whose birthday happens to fall two days before Christmas.
So every December 23rd since 1990, Tokyo's Imperial Palace has opened its gates to the public and the emperor receives the crowd's congratulations and best wishes.
Unlike the many cheap hotels in Tokyo, the Imperial Palace lies almost entirely out of view and is inaccessible to the general public for the majority of the year.
Some 2,000 people traditionally cross the Nijubashi Bridge to enter the palace and show their respect for the emperor and the imperial family, who address the crowd three times throughout the morning.
In traditional Japanese style the waiting crowds are always ready to show their excitement and create a festive atmosphere by cheering and waving their country's flag.
