Drink to This
For those interested in traditional European cultural events, autumn provides plenty of deep-rooted traditions, one of which is the Martini Festival in Latvia that takes place on November 10th.
The date traditionally marks the end of autumn and the start of winter, the changeover from Usin to Martins, two pagan horse deities.
A number of traditional activities surround the festival, including the chasing of martins (hence the name – it's got nothing to do with the drink) and killing roosters to ward off evil spirits.
Naturally enough, there is plenty of food and drink associated with the festival, with lots of meat (especially rooster) and martini balls, made from a mix of vegetables.
The festival takes place all over Latvia, which has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
Latvia also offers a number of other attractions, with large areas of the country covered in forest, making it a good place for hunting and fishing as well as nature tourism.
