Enjoy a Nice Martini

Enjoy a nice Martini Visitors to Latvia in November should be careful when ordering a Martini, for in this country it means something very different from the drink.

The Martini Festival, celebrated across the country, is in fact a historically-rooted traditional autumn festival, marking the transition between the seasons as fall turns to winter, the latter being named after the horse God Martins, hence the name.

As a result, the event marks an end to all that tedious preparation of food through time-honoured practices such as salting and instead the start of sledging and other winter sports.

It also sees Roosters being killed and put in the pot, along with the bringing out of other delicacies.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Latvia can have a fascinating time finding out about this long-standing tradition as well as enjoying the food which comes with it.

Luckily, the bars in the capital Riga, as elsewhere in the country, do serve real Martinis.
