Riga Hosts Alternative Film Festival

The Latvian town of Riga is set to host one of the Baltic's most prestigious alternative movie events, the Arsenals.

Help every two years in September, the festival takes submissions from a wide-range of genres, with a specific interest in films which attempt to defy the conventions of cinema.

According to the festival's own history: "When we are asked to explain the criteria used to select films and invite certain directors, we usually answer: 'We cannot work according to any cataloguing principle.'"

Organised by the Riga International Film Forum, the program will include cinema from around the world, a special competition for Baltic films from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and the main international competition screening.

Awards include best full-length film, best documentary film and best animation.

Visitors to the event will be able to see the films in competition, as well as mini-festivals running along side Arsenals, including the children's and fantasy film festivals.

The event takes place between September 16th and 24th. Tickets for screenings will be sold separately.
