Riga to Bid for World Chess Olympics

Riga to bid for World Chess Olympics After recently hosting the world ice hockey championships, Riga, the capital of Latvia is hoping to attract a less physical tournament – chess.

Representatives from the Riga City Council are expected to travel to Torino in Italy on May 29th to attend the congress of the World Chess Federation, reports the Baltic Times.

Vice-mayor Almers Ludviks is expected to make a bid for Riga to host the 2010 World Chess Olympics.

This prestigious event is held every two years and typically attracts around 1,500 competitors from over 150 countries.

It has been suggested that a newly-built multifunctional hall in the Latvian capital will be a perfect venue for the Olympics.

The Latvian Chess Federation claims that a successful bid would need state funding, as well as donations from sponsors and other supporters.

To see what else Latvia has to offer, now may be the perfect opportunity to book your accommodation in one of the many hotels in Riga.
