Morocco
Morocco's full Arabic name Al-Mamlaka al-Maghribiya translates to 'The Western Kingdom.' It is located in North Africa bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Algeria. As a constitutional monarchy, Morocco is the only African country that is not a member of the African Union. The majority of Moroccans are Sunni Muslims of Arab or Berber. The Jewish minority has significantly decreased and most minorities are now French and Spanish. Morocco's official language is classical Arabic although around 40% of the population mostly in rural areas speak Berber. French still remains the second unofficial language. The largest industry in Morocco is the mining of phosphates, and tourism also makes up a large source of revenue.
Morocco is divided into sixteen regions. The south east of the country is very sparsely populated, as this area is part of the Sahara Desert. Most of the population lives to the north of the mountains. The Rif Mountains border the Mediterranean on the northern side and the Atlas Mountains run south west to north east. There is also the most extensive river system to be found in North Africa. Forests cover around 12% of the land whilst 18% is arable.

The small capital of Rabat has a population of 1.2 million. The Royal Palace, Hassan, and the narrow streets of Casbah des Oudaya are popular tourist attractions.
Casablanca is the centre of commerce and industry and the leading port. It is the largest city with a population of 3.5 million. Unfortunately many can be disappointed as the film was actually shot in Florida. A must see tourist site in Casablanca is the Hassan II Mosque.
Marrakech the second largest city should be visited to appreciate its rich history and tradition. The city centre square is a fascinating home to snake charmers, acrobats, herb doctors, story tellers and exotic food stalls. The seventy metre Koutoubia minaret is a interesting landmark located just off from the square. Merrakech museum is a popular tourist attraction displaying Moroccan art and sculpture and a restoration of hammam.

There are many beaches in Morocco to be enjoyed. Grottes d'Hercules is clean and popular, often full during July and August although the waters are cooler here. Tangier's town beach although much warmer and set amongst beautiful mountains is not as clean. Asfiha Al Hoceima is recommended for walking and swimming. Lalla Fatma is probably the most popular beach in Morocco with beautiful tranquillity. Alternatively for more activities rather than relaxation and sunning, Agadir and Essaouira are famed for providing ideal locations for wind surfing.
The Atlas Mountains are the greatest mountain range in North Africa and Djebel Touubkal can be found here which boasts the highest peak in Africa. Mountain biking, trekking, rock climbing and skiing are all popular activities here. The Berber stone and clay villages built on the rocky slopes are fascinating to explore.
Ourika Valley, is one of only few areas of Morocco so green and lush. Quaint interesting villages run along the rapid flowing river and during summer months this provides a welcome respite from the heat. The valley road winds through the mountains and Mount Toubkal the highest peak can be found here offering breathtaking and spectacular views. The road also leads to the seven waterfalls of Setti Fatma.

During the months of February to April, Ouka'meden is the spot to visit for skiing. Exploring the Atlas Mountains is magnificent and stunning, but for a truly unique and somewhat comical site the Souss Valley must be visited to see Goats which naturally climb Argan trees. Camel Trekking in Zagora also provides an authentic and unique experience.Moroccan Cuisine
Due to the influence and interaction of Morocco with other countries for centuries it has long been considered as having one of the most diversified cuisine's in the world. It mixes African, Mediterranean, Berber, Moorish, Middle Eastern and more recently Turkish, Spanish and Jewish. Although many of the extensively used spices are imported into Morocco many ingredients are home grown such as saffron, mint, olives, oranges and lemons. Couscous is the most famous dish, and chicken is the most widely eaten meat. Green tea with mint is the most popular drink often accompanied by hard sugar cones or lumps.
Climate in Morocco
The Mediterranean climate becomes more extreme towards the centre where it is more mountainous and temperatures vary greatly on location. The eastern side of the mountains is rigorous and pre-Saharan whilst the western slopes are cool and well watered. Wet season is October, November, April and May although generally conditions are dry all year round. Winter months do offer perfect days in the south but nights are extremely cold.
Although July and August are the hottest months, spring is the recommended time to visit where there is a summer climate in the southern areas, mountains and along the coast.
