International Marathon Hits Marrakech
People staying in cheap hotels in Marrakech will be treated to quite a sight in January as the city plays host to its annual International Marathon.
It was recently confirmed that the 20th edition of the Marrakech International Marathon and semi-marathon will be held on January 25th 2009.
The event will be sponsored and attended by Abdelkader El Moaziz, who set the record for the Marrakech marathon in 1994 and has also won races in London and Chicago.
More than 5,000 runners from all over the world visit Morocco for the event, which is recognised as one of the most prestigious marathons in the world.
One of the highlights of the race, for spectators in particular, is the picturesque circuit and the mild but pleasant climate that Marrakech enjoys in January.
Participants run past palm trees, orange groves and olive trees, also passing through the city's ramparts on a route that offers plenty of good vantage points for visitors to Marrakech.
