The Netherlands or Holland as we refer to it in Great Britain, is a country, which lies to the northwest of the continent of Europe. Its eastern border is flanked by the country of Germany and the south and west, is bordered by Belgium. In the north it has the North Sea at its border. This country is a parliamentary democracy and is a constitutional monarchy. The country covers an area of approximately 41 thousand square kilometres and has a population of about 16 million people. Amsterdam is the capitol, however The Hague is the seat of Government. The country is very picturesque and has a thriving tourist industry with many attractions to offer. The Netherlands and its people are well liked worldwide and have the reputation of being a friendly and fair nation. The Dutch people have little resistance upon entering other countries and are welcomed in most establishments.

The weather is moderate throughout the year with a relatively mild winter and summer alike, however quite windy. The country is well known for being quite flat and its dykes and dunes, built to prevent flooding as most of the country lies at sea level or just below. Great sections of the land are called polders a sort of reclaimed land from the sea, some of which lie deeper than sea level than others. The country has struggled constantly with rise and fall of the water levels. Great floods and storms have caused severe loss of life and devastation in the 12th and 13th centuries. Numerous projects and defence programs have been created such as windmills, (one of the Netherlands famous symbols) and some abandoned, as yet more floods or storms deemed them useless against the constant battle with the water levels and the sea. Many of the farming methods over the centuries have also contributed to the unsolvable problem of the rise and fall of water. In present day a series of defence programs are currently in operation such as the huge Delta project, recently completed and "hoogheemraadschappen", (high home councils), who maintain the water level programs in order to protect vulnerable regions from flooding.

From the 12th to the mid 16th centuries and until the Eighty Years War, the boundaries and shape of the country of the Netherlands constantly changed with the battles and skirmishes of conquerors and rulers of middle Europe at that time. In 1579, the Seventeen Provinces were split into two and the northern half was declared independent and the Union of Utrecht was formed, which is the basis of the Netherlands today, however it was not until 1648 before Spain would recognise this independence. The country went on to be a powerful seafaring nation and possibly the most influential neutral traders in Europe. Dutch colonies are spread throughout the world due to exploits of its many early explorers and navigators. The country remained neutral throughout World War I, however it was occupied by the Germans during World War II and suffered many losses of life, along with many other countries in Europe at that time. The Netherlands has since prospered and was instrumental in founding NATO and the European Union, both of which it is a member.
