Amsterdam Gets Up and Running
Although many holidaymakers may not associate Amsterdam with exercise and activity, the historic city does offer travellers the chance to get a out of breath in September.
One of the most popular running events in the country, the Dam tot Damloop is a 16 km course taking place on September 17th 2006.
Following a route from Dam Square to the centre of Zaandam, through the IJ-tunnel, the race attracts more than 20,000 runners from all over the country, including a number of top athletes.
A total prize fund of £7,500 is available for the first three finishers, while thousands of spectators attend each year to cheer on the runners.
Amsterdam has made its name as one of the world's top holiday destinations for an altogether more laid back sort of entertainment, a vibrant night life and many cheap hotels.
The city does have areas of cultural interest too, with the Van Gogh Museum and other historic sights to be seen.
