Amsterdam Goes Back to Its Roots

Amsterdam goes back to its Roots The city of Amsterdam will be embracing the diversity of music to be found around the world at its Roots Festival this year.

Celebrating its 11th outing in 2008, the Roots Festival will run from June 14th to 21st and adopt a theme of 'world in Europe'.

Performers have been chosen to show how musical influences from across the globe are increasingly taking root and making a mark in Europe.

A number of innovative and eclectic international artists are on the programme, including Baaba Maal of Senegal, Portugal's Ana Moura, Colombian artist Guayacan Orquesta and Minyeshu of Ethiopia and the Netherlands.

The festival will comprise around 60 concerts, taking place at venues in Amsterdam including the Concertgebouw, Tropentheater, Melkweg and Paradiso.

There will also be a free outdoor festival in Oosterpark called Roots Open Air, which last year attracted some 58,000 visitors.
