Canal Parade to Course Through Amsterdam
Visitors to Amsterdam on the first weekend in August will find it hard to miss the spectacular Canal Parade.
This event, which is the highlight of the Amsterdam Pride festival, is watched by some 350,000 people as it takes to the city's famous waterways every year.
The Canal Parade was first launched in 1995 and has become increasingly popular over the past 12 years.
It regularly features a range of inventive and unusual vessels, including extravagantly decorated flat-bottomed boats, barges and even floating clogs.
The parade carries partygoers past some of the capital city's most famous landmarks, setting off from the Westerdok and heading along the Amstel river, before passing the Stadhuis and Muziektheater to finish at the Oosterdok.
People staying in cheap hotels in Amsterdam can take up a number of locations to watch the parade, including the bridges over the Prinsengracht canal or the Amstel, or the quaysides by the Muziektheater.
The Dutch capital is home to more than 100km of canals, which create about 90 separate islands and are crossed by some 1,500 bridges.
