Damien Hirst to Show Skull in Amsterdam

Damien Hirst to show skull in Amsterdam For the Love of God, the diamond-encrusted skull made by British artist Damien Hirst, will this year go on display at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum.

Hirst set more than 8,000 flawless diamonds in a platinum cast of a human skull to create the piece and placed a large, pear-shaped pink diamond in the centre of the forehead.

The artwork was first unveiled at London's White Cube in 2007 and attracted international attention.

People staying in cheap hotels in Amsterdam will be able to see For the Love of God from November 1st to December 15th as it begins an international tour.

To accompany the skull, Hirst himself has chosen a selection of 17th century art from the Rijksmuseum's collection.

In an interview with the Rijksmuseum magazine for art and history, Hirst said: "As an artist I try to make things that people can believe in, that they can relate to, that they can experience. You therefore have to show them as well as possible."

Hirst has been responsible for a number of controversial artworks during his career, the most famous of which was a 14-foot tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde.

This piece will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York until 2010.
