Discover Van Gogh's French still lifes Lovers of the work of Vincent van Gogh can lay eyes on some pieces they may not be familiar with at an exhibition being presented in Amsterdam this year.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Amsterdam will be able to see a display of still life pieces created by Van Gogh during his time in France. The showcase will be open until January next year.

The painter believed that creating still lifes should be the beginning of all artistic endeavour and he used the method to hone his skills from the time of his very first painting in 1881.

In 1886, Van Gogh travelled to Paris to study and was compelled to rethink his approach to painting when he saw the work of his French contemporaries.

Arguably his most famous painting of all, Sunflowers, is a still life. Other subjects depicted by the artist included a pair of leather clogs, a chair and a glass of absinthe.

Art lovers visiting Amsterdam may also be interested in visiting Rembrandthuis, a museum located in the house where Rembrandt lived and worked.
