Documenting culture in Amsterdam The capital of Holland will be getting down to the nitty-gritty from November 22nd to December 2nd as it hosts the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

Reportedly the largest documentary festival in the world, the event has screened more than 250 international documentaries every year since 1988.

The IDFA has become known for the international flavour of its screening schedule and its interest in creativity. Films chosen for the festival are those that express the director's point of view in the most creative and cinematic way.

Every year the entries compete for a number of awards, including the Joris Ivens accolade for the best documentary of an hour or more and the Silver Wolf honour for the best film of less than 60 minutes.

Last year's winners of these awards were Pernille Rose Gronkjaer for The Monastery - Mr Vig and the Nun and Eva Mulvad for Enemies of Happiness.

The IDFA also gives a first appearance award to a debut film in order to support up and coming directors.

Amsterdam, which offers a choice of cheap hotels to visitors, is one of the Europe's most popular city break destinations owing to its culture, landmarks and lifestyle.
