Rotterdam hosts one of its biggest parties in late May, when the Dunya Festival takes place.
The event, held in the park at the Euromast and Parklaan in the centre of the city, is a one-day event on May 27th which features a rich variety of cultures from around the world, particularly the Dutch-speaking parts of it.
Admission to the event is free and the venue is close to tram and underground stops.
Rotterdam is a modern city and Europe's largest port, the two of which are indelibly linked as the old city saw heavy bombing in the Second World War followed by extensive redevelopment.
The most notable of these buildings is the 610 foot-high Euromast, from which visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the harbour.
Naturally enough, major visitor attractions include the Netherlands Architecture Institute and the Maritime Museum.
Rotterdam has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
