Gaudeamus Music Week Strikes Up in Amsterdam
Classical music lovers will be well placed if they are staying in cheap hotels in Amsterdam at the beginning of September as the city hosts the annual Gaudeamus Music Week.
This event, taking place at venues including the Bimhuis and Muziekgebouw between September 1st and 7th, is a competitive music festival.
A jury selects 17 works from more than 280 entries by composers from across the world.
The festival, which began shortly after World War II and initially involved only Dutch composers, focuses on music created by young artists and encourages vision and innovation.
A top prize of €4,550 (£3,600) is awarded to the winning composer, which is given as a commission for a new ensemble work that is traditionally performed at the following year's festival.
Amsterdam is home to a number of venues where visitors can enjoy musical performances, including the Heineken Music Hall, the Concertgebouw and Paradiso.
