It's not often Rotterdam is equated with Edinburgh, but Holland's second city is more than just one of the world's biggest ports; it is also host to the Netherlands Military Tattoo from September 27th to October 1st.

As it happens, Rotterdam is a more fitting place for a tattoo than the Scottish capital, for the term "tattoo" is Dutch in origin, coming from the phrase "tap den toe", when military bands would signify curfews with marching bands through town streets.

Rotterdam has been holding the military parade since the 1950s, and the display is one of the largest of its kind, held at the same time every year at the Ahoy' Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is a young city, offering a wide variety of accommodation, including plenty of cheap hotels, with the same laid-back culture any visitor to Holland might expect, but also an emphasis on modern architecture after the old city was devastated in World War II, which is best viewed from the 185-metre Eurotower.

History buffs will find plenty to interest them in the many museums, such as the Maritime Museum and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, which houses many works by great artists, including Vincent van Gogh.
