In the Middle of the Action at Middachten
For those who love a traditional Christmas, Middachten Castle at De Steeg near Arnhem may be just the place to go.
Held from December 12th to the 17th, the Christmas fair offers a festive season just the way it used to be, with Christmas Trees, Father Christmas and a nativity scene to go with the shopping opportunities.
The estate, which belongs to the Middachten family and is decked in their red and white livery, dates from the 12th century with the moated castle being rebuilt in 1698.
A highlight of any visit here is the gardens, which include the Walled Garden and the Unholy Forest.
Nearby Arnhem also has plenty for visitors, particularly anyone interested in wartime history, as the site of the famous 1944 battle, depicted in the film "A Bridge Too Far".
Entry to the castle is €8(£5.36), or €4 for four to 12-year-olds.
The De Steeg and Arnhem area offers plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
