Paddling Round the Dam
Amsterdam is famous for many things, including tulips, Ajax football club and its liberal social values, but nothing is more integral to the city than its canals, which host the 'Kano Toertocht door de Grachten' (canoe tour of Amsterdam) starting on October 9th and lasting two nights.
The festival features some 500 canoes and Kayaks covered in fairy lights slowly working their way round the 165 canals, while thousands watch the free display from the banks.
Visitors can enjoy the canals themselves in other ways too, with numerous boat rides available.
Amsterdam also offers a wide range of accommodation with plenty of cheap hotels.
The city has a diverse range of attractions to suit all tastes, with the nightlife and coffee shops appealing to some, while, according to the tourist board, the city has no less than 7,000 different monuments, offering historical and architectural interest along with Anne Frank's house and the Van Gogh museum.
