Poetry Corner

Poetry corner Holland's famous Poetry International Festival is set to take place in Rotterdam.

Offering a peaceful, highbrow alternative to the World Cup, the largest gathering of international poets in Europe will be held at the city's Municipal Theatre between June 17th and 23rd 2006.

Around 35 wordsmiths will attend the event, which features themed programmes, lectures, discussions, on-stage interviews and translation projects.

One of the main themes is African poetry, and will feature a special programme to mark the tenth anniversary of Russian luminary Joseph Brodsky's death.

A 'slampiomship' will also feature at the festival, which is an on-stage poetry recital competition in front of a live audience, where judges and the audience pick their favourites, and eliminate the weaker poet.

"On paper, the writer is at the mercy of the reader," state the organisers.

"The poet has to dredge the maximum out of himself when he is dependent on his audience."

Poets present works in their own language, but the featured poems will be available in Dutch and English translations, making them more accessible to fans.

Irish poet, writer and 1995 Nobel prize for literature winner Seamus Heaney is one of the distinguished guests attending the festival.
