Queen's Day in Amsterdam

Queen's Day in Amsterdam April 29th every year sees thousands of glassy-eyed Dutch people take to the streets of Amsterdam to commemorate the former Queen Juliana's birthday.

Queen Juliana won the hearts of the Dutch during her long rein and was the subject of public mourning upon her death in 2004.

The festival involves a large street party that lasts well into the next day, which was the actual date of the Queen's birthday, and attracts over a million visitors to the city.

This year, parades, craft shows, street theatre and flea markets are designed to keep the interest up throughout the city.

Children will enjoy activities at Vondelpark while bands will entertain the crowds in Prinsengracht and Rembrandtsplein.

Homomonument and Reguliersdwaarsstraat are the big areas for gay festivities.

The current Queen, Beatrix, also chooses the date to pay visits to one or two other cities in the country.
