Tropenmuseum Hosts Sculpture Show

Tropenmuseum hosts sculpture show Up to April 13th this year, visitors staying in cheap hotels in Amsterdam will have the opportunity to explore an exhibition of exotic sculptures from New Guinea.

The Tropenmuseum in the Dutch capital will play host to 58 structures known as bisj poles.

These impressive creations, some of which stand more than 12 metres high, are used in centuries-old rituals of worship by the Asman people of New Guinea.

Visitors to this exhibition will see the rituals, which are still performed today, brought to life by combinations of light, sound and film.

All of the items included in the showcase will be gathered together in the museum's Light Hall, creating a forest of towering wooden poles, each of which has its own meaning and symbolism.

The exhibition, which will be concerned with the life of the Asmat people in general, will also include poetry, pieces of film, audio material and photographs.
