When the Wind Blows

The Netherlands is famous for its windmills, so what better day to be in the country than National Windmill Day.

Held every May (2007 date to be confirmed), the event sees hundreds of wind and water mills all over the country opening for visitors to look around.

Participating mills fly blue pennants to show they are joining in and the good news is that the majority are offering free entry to visitors looking to observe the inner workings of these iconic structures.

As the event takes place nationwide, visitors can join in while staying in cheap hotels anywhere in the country.

This in turn makes it possible to combine the windy part of the trip with visits to the towns or cities of choice, be it Amsterdam with its museums and bohemian entertainment, Rotterdam with its modern vibrancy or the countryside with its tulips and traditional lifestyles.
