Land of the Long Wine Cloud

Land of the long wine cloud For those who love their scenery as much as their wine, the ideal combination may be found for those visiting New Zealand at the Waiheke Island wine festival.

The festival, held on February 10th, offers visitors the chance to try some of the newest of the new world wines, with the vineyards of the island dating back just 23 years.

According to the festival site, these young wines are similar to French wines in taste, with the Te Whau variety bearing a distinct resemblance to Bordeaux.

Waiheke Island itself, with its fine scenery and beaches is just a short ferry ride from Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, with a return trip including entry to the festival costing NZ$89 (£31).

Visitors will be able to enjoy a combination of beautiful scenery and lively urban bustle on the trip, with both the island and the city offering cheap hotels.

Auckland also offers a good base for touring the North Island of New Zealand, which is famous for its volcanic scenery and geothermal springs.
