Sevens Heaven in Wellington

New Zealand is possibly more famous for its love of rugby than anything else and the country will be doing what it does best, supporting its national team, next February.

The annual New Zealand International Sevens tournament takes place in the Westpac Stadium in Wellington on February 1st and 2nd.

Involving 16 international teams and taking place over two frantic days and nights, this tournament sees sides competing for points that go towards the International Rugby Board Sevens series.

Rugby Sevens teams are made up of a total of 12 players, with seven on the field at any one time and five on the bench.

This form of the game is popular among many people as the fact that only 14 players are on the pitch at once frees up space, leading to a quicker style of play as competitors are given the opportunity to run with the ball.

Indeed, the breathless pace of the sport is highlighted by the fact that games consist of two halves lasting only seven minutes.
