Norway borders Sweden, Finland and Russia on the Scandinavian Peninsula and has an extensive coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean. Norway's population is around 4.5 million. Most Norwegians are Nordic or North Germanic with small Sami and Finnish minorities. Although there is no official spoken language there are two official written forms, Bokmal and Nynorsk and religion is heavily protestant. In recent years immigration has accounted for more than half of the population growth and therefore there are increasingly more groups of minorities. Although Norway has opted to stay out of the European Union they participate in the single market through the EEA Agreement.
Norway has an extensive coastline, and is recognised for its several major glaciers and mountainous areas. The coastline is rugged and deeply indented by many fjords and numerous scattered small islands also lie not far from the coast. Norway’s countryside offers the idea place for an active holiday, and attracts many people keen for hiking and climbing, skiing, paragliding, rafting and water sports.
Norway is well known for its salmon and 145000 are caught by rod in rivers every year. The salmon season runs from the beginning of June to end of August depending on weather conditions. The Gaula River is the best sport fishing river in Europe for salmon and is well known for bigger sized salmon. The Lakselv River is surrounded by diverse vegetation and rich wildlife, and is another well known and popular spot for salmon fishing and is particularly good for fly fishing.

Oslo is the capital of Norway and has a population of 550,000 located between fjords, mountains and forests making it ideal for many activities such as mountain biking and skiing. Although the city is popular as a winter destination there is still much to offer throughout the summer months. There are over 50 museums and art galleries and popular tourist attractions include the Vigeland Sculpture Park, Viking Ship Museum, Holmenkollen and Munch Museum. There is something to suit everyone in Oslo including shopping, business districts and many restaurants. The Grunerlokka is a popular area for bars and restaurants, offering local cuisine from a great range of outdoor establishments. Top Oslo attractions include Akershus Castle and Vigeland Park.
Bergen is in a spectacular setting, surrounded by mountains and part of a pretty and charming harbour. This is the place to visit to discover Norwegian history and culture through a small town atmosphere. Must see attractions in Bergen include Bryggen Meeting Point, Haakon’s Hall, Rosenkrantz Tower and St Mary’s Church.
Alesund and Sunnmore is the place to discover art and architecture. Surrounded by small fishing communities, mountains and island gems the village often reminds visitors of one from a fairy tale and offers cultural and natural attractions. The Sognefjord can be found in this area and this is the longest fjord in the world. It can be explored by boat all year and the two glaciers can also be accessed when explored with a local guide.
Climate in Norway
Norway’s best months are between May and September. Although the climate is typically rainy, it is surprisingly mild due to the Gulf Stream flowing along the coasts. It is areas away from the coast that can become much colder. Gales, rain and cloud are most likely along the West Coast. During summer the northern areas receive no night, and even southern areas experience very little. Winter months bring most days close to twilight.
