Food and Fjords
Food fanatics who fancy matching great culinary experiences with Great Scenic ones can do both in the Norwegian town of Alesund.
Situated close to the Hjorund and Geiranger fjords, the town hosts the festival from August 29th to September 2nd, with competition between producers and cooks combining with a promotion of the agriculture and fishing industries, with the biggest winners being the tastebuds of those who indulge in this week of wining and dining.
Visitors to Alesund can also enjoy spectacular scenery in the shape of the many fjords in the area, with cruises available to help the well-fed visitors staying in cheap hotels enjoy the dramatic cliffs, rugged crags and spectacular waterfalls.
The town itself is an attractive fishing village, with many varicoloured and attractive houses lining the harbour.
Alesund is particularly renowned for its high concentration of Jugendstil (art nouveau) architecture.
