Here Comes the Sun
Lots of people love a sunrise, but in the Norwegian town of Longyearbyen in Svalbard the first sunrise of the year is more welcome than most.
The result is the seven-day Return of the Sun festival, when the long arctic winter night that lasts from November finally gives way to direct sunlight on February 16th as the first pink rays strike land and the red solar disc becomes visible again.
A whole week of festivities, with music, exhibitions and entertainment of various types goes on as the days gets longer and longer, from an hour and 36 minutes to over five hours of sunlight, over the course of the week, according to Time and Date.com.
Visitors staying in this, the northernmost settlement in the world, can also enjoy a range of other wonders, inmcluding spectacular arctic mountain scenery and the incredible light show of the Northern Lights in the night sky.
