Northern Highlights
Film buffs looking for a truly arctic experience may find just the thing in Tromso, the world's most northerly city.
Set over 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, from January 16th to the 21st, the Tromso International Film Festival takes place just when the sun will be rising on this Norwegian outpost for the first time in two months, with the Aurorae Borealis (northern lights) a possible sight in the dark sky.
Held in five venues in the city, the festival itself will feature a range of films from many countries, with a particular emphasis on Scandinavia and the Baltic region.
There are also seminars, quizzes and parties as part of the event
Apart from the films, Tromso has many attractions for visitors staying in the city's cheap hotels.
It has the Arctic cathedral, said to have some of the largest stain-glass windows in Europe, spectacular local scenery with fjords and mountains, plus the Northern lights planetarium.
In addition to this, the city has plenty of bars and pubs to offer plenty of midnight fun.
