Run in the Sun

Run in the sun Lots of people dream of running a marathon on a sunny day, but in the Norwegian port of Tromso it is possible to do it on a sunny night.

Situated over two hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle, Tromso enjoys constant day through summer, with the sun above the horizon constantly from May 21st to July 21st.

The result is a unique race, the world's northernmost marathon starting at 20:30 local time on June 16th (according to organisers) and ending sometime the next day.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels can either enter or watch the marathon or participate in a number of other races, from a half-marathon to a children's fun run.

Entry to the marathon costs KR500 (£42).

In addition to the race, those enjoying the midnight sun in Tromso can enjoy fjords and mountains along with interesting buildings like the Arctic Cathedral, the world's most northerly botanical garden and the spectacular cable car ride up Mount Storsteinen.
