Poland is a large landlocked country in the Northern Hemisphere and is situated almost in the middle of Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic on its West Side, with Belarus, Ukraine and Slovakia on its east and south sides and Russia and Lithuania to the north sides. It has a population of approximately 38 million people and covers and area of 312 thousand square kilometres. The currency is zloty and the country is in the process of economic growth. It’s a thriving country with its independence and a member of NATO and the European Union.

Warsaw is the capital city and it has many other large cities, such as Krakow, Lodz, Gdansk and many more. The country has many mountains the largest being Rysy and the longest river is Wisla. The land has mountains and central plains and the climate is made up of mild summers and extremely cold winters. The majority of the population lives in or around the large towns and cities. There are a variety of religions in Poland but Christianity is the most popular.

Being in central Europe, the country of Poland was formed in the Piast dynasty era about a thousand years ago. Poland prospered throughout the 14th to 16th centuries and was recognised as one of the richest and strongest countries of Europe. In the late 18th century the May 3rd Constitution was accepted by the Sejm of Poland and Lithuania, which allowed Poland to be taken over by Russia, Austria and Prussia, three other prosperous countries of middle Europe. It was only after World War I, initiated by Germany and Austria, that Poland regained her independence and became a free country. However, this was short lived as Poland was soon invaded by German troops under the instructions of Adolph Hitler, the German dictator, in 1939. This was the spark that caused concern amongst world leaders of that time and ultimately resulted in World War II, as Hitler’s invasions were to occupy further territories, in this area.

The war lasted for five long and painful years and the Germans occupied Poland throughout the war. An efficient and well-structured rail system existed in Poland and this along with the geological location and proximity to Germany enabled the Germans to use areas of Poland for imprisonment and Concentration camps without attracting world attention.

After the war Poland was under the rule of the Soviet Union and Communism was established throughout Poland. Communism ruled until 1989 when a leader from Solidarity, a union body which stood for workers rights, managed to get the vote of the whole populace and end communism rule in Poland.
