Crib Contest for Krakow
As one of the most strongly Catholic countries in Europe, Poland celebrates Christmas in the grand manner that might be expected, not least in Krakow, home town of Pope John Paul II.
Running from December until February, the city hosts a crib (szopka) competition as entrants try to put together the most ornate and colourful nativity scene they can.
After being diplayed in the main square, the cribs are taken in mid December and put on display in the museum, where the contest is judged.
The cribs then remain on display until February, with some becoming permanent relics.
Apart from the spectacular cribs, Krakow offers much for visitors staying in cheap hotels in the city.
The centre, with many historic houses, churches and squares, is a UNESCO world heritage site, while a major revival of Jewish culture in the city is taking place, following the exposure the city got from its depiction in the film Schindler's List.
Lovers of the outdoors can also find the Tatra mountains and Jura uplands nearby.
