Historic Festival in Beautiful Gdansk
Gdansk's historic festival, St Dominic's Fair, can trace its roots back to the 13th Century.
The event drew merchants from across Europe to the port, with over 400 ships bringing French and Spanish wines, Portuguese spices and English cloth, while circus acts, acrobats, magicians and theatre troupes would flock to the city to entertain the sailors.
In modern times, the festival continues to attract both local residents and tourists from around Europe, to take part or participate in the programme of cultural and sports events.
Beginning on the last Saturday in July, this year the 29th, the festival runs for three weeks into August, seeing the streets packed with merchant stalls and theatrical performances.
Old sea shanties fill the air, mixed with traditional gypsy romance songs, while the scents of local and exotic delicacies will entice many a traveller to sample.
The city itself offers a range of accommodation for visitors, from five-star to cheap hotels, with youth hostels and other budget options also available.
