Horsing Around

Horsing around Visitors to the city of Krakow will be able to discover a very unusual tradition that commemorates the victory over the Tatars back in 1241.

Known as the Lajkonik, the event sees a man disguised as a Tatar warrior riding round the market place on a wooden horse, prancing around in a time-honoured merrymaking tradition.

The warrior carries a mace with which he touches some of the gathered crowd, which is supposed to convey good luck on the one touched.

Forming the centrepiece of a parade and much partying, the event is just one of many historic attractions in the city that visitors staying in cheap hotels can enjoy.

Grand buildings include the Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral, the Basilica of St Mary's and the city walls.

The city also has a wide range of museums and a good reputation for nightlife.
