In the Footsteps of the Pianist

In the footsteps of the pianist For the traveller interested in the more poignant aspects of history, as well as cultural diversity, the Polish Capital offers an insight into its Jewish heritage with daily tours running until December the 16th in the old Jewish district.

The area, the setting for Roman Polanski's 2002 film The pianist, was turned into ghetto by the Nazis in World War II.

A tour of the former ghetto includes the memorial to the Nozyk Synagogue, the only Warsaw synagogue to survive the war (it was used as a stable), which is still used as a place of worship today by the surviving Jewish community.

Other features of the tour include the memorial to ghetto heroes, the Jewish theatre (with performances in Yiddish) and the Jewish cemetery.

Warsaw has a variety of accommodation options, including plenty of cheap hotels.
