Good Things Come in Threes

Good things come in threes There can hardly be a livelier time to be in Lisbon than June, when the bunting comes out in grand style to celebrate not one, not two, but three saint's days.

Collectively, these are known as Festas dos Santos Populares, or feast days of the popular saints, with this popularity enhanced further by the big parades and fascinating traditions that accompany them.

The saints in question are St Antonio, St Peter and St John, while the most notable tradition is that of neighbours swapping basil pots and carnations with poems written on them.

Visitors to the city at this time can join in the party atmosphere as well as enjoying a variety of other interesting sights, sounds and tastes.

Among these are a range of gothic and romanesque buildings, such as the Se, the city's cathedral, plenty of good shopping, food and nightlife in the Bairro Alto and Estrela districts, while the Gulbenkian Centre offers rich culture, being home to the city's orchestra.

Lisbon has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
