In the Running for Lisbon Sun
Although it has been said that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, many runners could be doing just that this September.
Lisbon's half marathon now takes place twice a year, with the next race to occur on September 24th 2006.
Over 36,000 runners took part in the last race, in March 2007, with similar numbers expected to take part this year, in a bid to break the current course record of just over 59 minutes for men, or just under one hour and six minutes for women.
The race begins on the impressive Vasco da Gama bridge, in the east of the city in the Parque das Nações, which crosses the river Tagus.
Opened in 1998, the bridge is 17 km long, with 12 km spanning the river, Whatsonwhen reports.
The race has been run since 1990, with September's event set to be the 18th instalment.
