Lis go for a run For those who like a challenge but maybe don't fancy taking on a full marathon, Lisbon's half-marathon on March 18th may provide an ideal alternative.

Claimed by organisers to be the largest race of its kind in the world, the Lisbon Half-Marathon has been running since 1990 and takes in a variety of sights in this historic and beautiful city.

Starting at the Vasco De Gama suspension bridge, the race crosses the wide stretch of the River Tago before heading back and forth along the north bank, finishing by the city's cathedral in the Belem district.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Lisbon can also enjoy the city in more leisurely ways.

Amongst the key attractions are the Gulbenkian cultural foundation, offering music and arts, the architectural grandeur of the Monsanto fort, fine eating and nightlife in the Estrela and Bairro Alto districts and sporting interest in the city's two famous football clubs, Sporting and Benfica.
