Lisbon Lights Up to Celebrate St Anthony

Lisbon lights up to celebrate St Anthony Travellers heading to Portugal this summer may wish to sample the popular festival of Santo Antonio, one of three saints celebrated in Lisbon.

Along with St John and St Peter, the tribute to St Anthony is part of a colourful commemoration of some of Portugal's favourite sons.

Anthony of Lisbon, as he was also known, was a well-heeled inhabitant who spent his life working with the poor.

Now every year a month-long festival marks his life, with food, music and dancing throughout Lisbon's streets.

This year's event, slated for June 12th, should see visitors flock to the city's cheap hotels as tourists and locals alike prepare for a party to remember.

Among the highlights of the festival is the parade which lines the Avenida da Liberdade, fringed by the wide street's picturesque fountains and restaurants.
