The Lisbon Marathon will celebrate its 21st year in 2007 as thousands of participants take to the streets of the Portuguese capital once again on December 2nd.
Like most marathons in major cities, this event is an opportunity to take a unique tour of some historic surroundings.
Starting and ending in the city's Praca do Comercio, the marathon follows three circular routes east, west and north, each time returning to the starting point.
The trio of routes represent the three types of race competitors can take part in – the full marathon, the half-marathon and the non-competitive 8km route.
There will be no timing and no classification in the shortest event but all participants will receive a t-shirt and a medal.
Whether visitors to Portugal in December decide to take part in the marathon or just spectate, the city offers a variety of cheap hotels whose beds will be welcome after a tiring day.
