Mad for It

Mad for it For those looking to spend part of this winter somewhere warm without travelling to the southern hemisphere, the Portuguese island of Madeira offers an alternative with a truly festive flavour.

The whole Christmas and New Year period offers a spectacular celebration, with the streets of the capital, Funchal, being turned into a vast sea of lights.

As if that was not illuminating enough, New Year's Eve sees a huge fireworks display.

While enjoying the seasonal festivities, visitors to Madeira can enjoy a variety of scenery and natural beauty, including volcanic caves at Sao Vicente, beaches, five natural reserves and grand mountains, the highest of which rises over 6,000 feet.

Funchal itself offers historic buildings, plus a number of museums and parks.

It also offers pleasant temperatures with the warm Saharan winds frequently blowing in.

Madeira has a wealth of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
