The old centre of Bucharest contains an assortment of 19th century buildings. Explore the cobblestone streets to admire the surroundings and discover the restaurants and shops. Revolution Square is also centrally located and features a tall monument in the centre in memory of those who died during the revolution.
There are plenty of attractions to explore around Bucharest including its 37 museums and 22 theatres. The Village Museum of Folk Art is based outdoors displaying around 300 wooden and stone buildings depicting Romania's history. It is one of the biggest and oldest outdoor museums in Europe. The History Museum of Romania is also worth visiting for those interested in the country's history and culture. It presents artefacts from prehistoric times to modern day.
The main boulevard has a selection of major brand shops and upscale boutiques. There are also several modern shopping centres, which have been built in recent years. A few of the best known are Bucharest Mall, Jolie Ville and Plaza Romania.
There are some lovely parks in Bucharest to enjoy. The Cismigiu Garden is the oldest in the city. During summer months boat rental is available and it offers ice skating during the winter. There is also a restaurant and several bars. The Botanical Garden has a small entry fee but includes plans from all over the world and also has an indoor tropical area.
Eating Out in Bucharest
Casa Doina is situated in a villa with carved wooden ceilings and lush gardens. The tripe soup with garlic and cream is recommended in this up-market Romanian spot.
Balthazar on Stradea Dumbrava Rosie is a trendy spot with booths and high ceilings. The food served is French-Asian with typical dishes including seafood soup with ginger and coconut milk.
Night Life in Bucharest
There are plenty of bars and rock clubs within Bucharest to try out. Two to try are Frame on Bulevardul Magheru and Studio Martin on Bulevardul Inacu de Hunedoara. Most discotheques attempt to satisfy all tastes and play a wide mixture of music.
A night at the Opera Nationala Bucuresti comes cheap for top tickets and world class performances and therefore definitely worth a visit. For visitors who enjoy gambling there are also a number of luxurious casino's in Bucharest.
From the Airport to Bucharest
At Otopeni International Airport buses depart from arrivals every 30 minutes to go into Bucharest centre. Buses also run from Baneasa Airport. Taxi's will transfer to and from both airports but are more expensive.
