By George Lovers of classical music have a good reason to visit Bucharest this September as the Romanian capital hosts the biannual George Enescu Festival, dedicated to the life and works of the country's most famous composer.

Running from September 1st to September 23rd 2007, the festival includes a competition for emerging performers in Enescu's chief instrumental media - violins, string quartets and pianos.

There will also be a wide range of performances of his work by a number of orchestras from different countries, with the schedule including the London Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra and the Basel Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to the festival, visitors staying in cheap hotels in Bucharest will find a number of interesting things to see and do.

Far from being a grey, post-communist sprawl, the city has a wide range of parks, gardens and lakes within its boundaries, though those interested in history may wish to see the imposing Place of the Parliament, built during the communist era.
