Fire Breathing Boats

Fire breathing boats For those who like their boat races but want to see something more exotic, such a combination is on offer at the Singapore River Regatta, held on November 11th to the 12th.

The race is both competitive and traditional, with boats containing 12 or 24 competitiors, plus a steersman and a drummer, racing down the Singapore River on boats fitted with dragon heads.

A series of prayer ceremonies surround the contest, with historic rituals taken every bit as seriously as the race, with hopes for prosperity and good fortune arising from the rituals.

The regatta epitomises the city-state, where the fast-paced matches up with the traditional and cultural and visitors can enjoy both, from the many temples and time-honoured customs to the modern skyline and technology.

Colonial history is also a feature with institutions such as the Raffles club and the symphony orchestra.

Singapore has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
