Night Race Boosts Singapore Visitor Numbers

Night race boosts Singapore visitor numbers There was an increase in the number of UK visitors to Singapore in September, largely as a result of the Formula One night race that was held towards the end of the month, according to new figures.

Around 34,000 people from the UK visited Singapore in the month, representing a year-on-year increase of around 3.2 per cent.

In addition to the race itself, there were a number of other events and activities to keep visitors to Singapore entertained in September, including the River Festival, the 2008 Motorshow and the Singapore Beer Festival.

Divya Panickar of the Singapore Tourism Board said: "The impact of the Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix has been a tremendous boost for Singapore, especially from the UK market, at a time when we are experiencing a challenging global economic environment.

"Singapore is inspiring more travellers to visit by hosting world-class events such as the Grand Prix, which Singapore will host for the next four years, as well as undertaking a number of substantial development projects."

Developments set to take place in Singapore over the coming years include the creation of the city's first reservoir, which will offer a number of water-based activities, and the construction of an international cruise terminal.

In January 2009, people staying in cheap hotels in Singapore will have an opportunity to see the Volvo Ocean Race as participants in the event stop in the city state.
