The Only Way is Up

The only way is up Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Singapore can do many nice relaxing things: take a boat trip on the harbour, sit in a nice restaurant enjoying the varied cuisine, look with curiosity at temples or have a drink in the famous Raffles Club.

Then again, there is an alternative.

For visitors feeling fit, really, really fit, there is the awesome challenge of the Vertical Marathon, which takes place on November 11th 2007.

The event involves racing up the stairs of the Swissotel, the tallest hotel in south Asia, in a race to be the first to reach the helipad at the top of this 73-storey building, with the prize for the winner being the chance to be flown to New York (though not straight from the helipad) to take part in the Empire State Building run-up.

Although the course isn't actually a marathon in the true sense, not being 26 miles, 385 yards in distance, it is bound to feel like it, so only the seriously fit should try this, while those who want to go on relaxing in this fascinating city can stay below and watch.
