Slovenia

Officially the Republic of Slovenia, located in central southern Europe the country has borders with Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Austria and the Adriatic Sea.  Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in Europe and has a population of just over 2,000,000 it has one of the lowest population density’s in Europe.  The majority of which is Slovenian but also with nationalities from the former Yugoslavia, and some other minorities from the bordering countries.

Slovenia gained its independence from Yugoslavia and became capitalist free market in 1991. It has since prospered enjoying economic and political stability and became part of the European Union in 2004

The country is largely mountainous and with a large proportion forested.  The Alps, The Dinarides, Pannonian Plain and the Mediterranean are four major European geographical regions and they all meet in Slovenia.  There is a exceptionally wide range of habitats throughout Slovenia despite it being a small country.  Over half the country is forest with beech and oak being the predominant trees apart from in mountainous areas fir, pine and spruce are more common.  Hunting has been a long standing tradition in Slovenia, and fauna that can be spotted whilst exploring the country side includes deer, boars, marmots, steinbocks and chamois.  Since 2005 there has been a very limited population of wolves and brown bears.  Many species that are endangered or extinct else where in Europe can still be found in Slovenia.

Places to Visit in Slovenia

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia situated along the Ljubljana River. There is a great sense of cultural heritage and the vibrant city feel throughout.  Through the town remains of the Roman settlement Emona and medieval old town can be seen.  Although Ljubljana is small and can easily be fully explored in a day it is also a great base for discovering the whole of Slovenia, being only a two hour drive to each border.

Maribor is the second largest city and is surrounded by land famous for its wine production.  The Town hall, Gothic cathedral and castle make popular tourist attractions here.   Boutique shopping here offers Slone and Foreign wares. The variety of restaurants and numerous art galleries all contribute to the city’s attractive diversity.

Triglav National Park is a must see offering the beautiful Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj.   Near to Lake Bled the Church of Sv Marija Bozja and Bled Castle are popular tourist attractions.  Lake Bohinj offers great summer hiking and exploring or skiing in winter.  Kranjska Gora is also near by with Mount Triglav, and this is the main mountainous area of Slovenia and is also particularly rich with flora and fauna.  It is the perfect place for winter activities, it holds world skiing championships and the worlds longest ski jump.

Soca Valley is stunningly beautiful and offers something for everyone.  The river is officially one of the cleanest in Europe and is an amazing turquoise colour. 

Slovenia is famous for its limestone caves. The Karst region is a greatly famous area to visit, and although there are thousands of caves here Postojna and Skocjan are the two main caves that can be visited.

Climate in Slovenia

Generally Slovenia has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers.  The coastal areas are wettest throughout winter and summer.  Inland summer months are the wettest, and winter months are colder.
