Areas of Interest in Ljubljana

The castle south of the river dates from the 15th century and from it's viewing tower you can see the series of hills and mountains in the distance.  Don't miss going into the chapel to see the intriguing serpentine pews and walls covered in coats of arms.

The National Gallery of Slovenia shows the works of Vigee le Brun, probably the best known painter represented here.  Amongst other artists the landscapes and portraits also offer a great insight into the country's history.

The streets of Mestni and Stari trg are lined with small elegant shops.  Make sure you stop at Frey Wille selling jewellery inspired by Gustav Klimt and the Idrian Lace Sales Gallery offering lace tablecloths, napkins and panels from the Idrian Lace School.  On a Sunday visit the flea market between the Triple Bridge and the Cobblers Bridge from 7:00am to 2:00pm.  Pick up a bargain from a variety of bygones from busts of Tito to old postcards.

Eating Out in Ljubljana

Cajna Hisa specialises in teas, Illy coffee and cakes.  First try a delicious sandwich or salad such as the rocket and prosciutto salad and pumpernickel with rocket, capers, tomatoes, egg and parmesan cheese.  Canjna Hisa can be found on Stari Trg and has a cosy domed mezzanine level.

One of the best restaurants is Gostilna As serving excellent dishes cooked with the best ingredients.  There is no set menu as the Chef determines dishes of the day based on the fresh ingredients that meet the high standards of the Chef.  A series of small rooms make it intimate and relaxing.

Night Life in Ljubljana

The centre comes to life at night, busy with locals, students and visitors.  Wander along the river for many café's and bars.  Try Enoteca with brick arched ceiling and stone walls.  You can find a large selection of wines here.  The local beer is Union, Tivoli is the paler lager style and Crni Baron is the darker ale.

Local Information

Ljubljana is one of Europe's smallest capitals and so the can easily be explored by foot.  The tourist information centre is just south of the Ljubljanica River providing a large selection of information and sells three day Ljubljana Cards providing unlimited bus travel and free or discounted admission to museums.

Further Afield from Ljubljana

Take a journey of just over an hour by bus from the railway station to one of Slovenia's most scenic highlights, Lake Bled and Castle.  Bikes can be hired for exploring this beautiful area and don't forget to visit the castle museum.

From the airport to Ljubljana

Buses run from Ljubljana Airport every hour to the railway station and take around 40 minutes.
