Take a Break
Slovenia was the first of the new states to emerge from the old Yugoslavia and has been hard at work to promote its culture and arts scene ever since, hence the Break Festival, held in the capital, Ljubljana since 1997.
Taking place at a time to be confirmed in November, the festival is a showcase of talent from the former Yugoslavia, Novosibirsk and Mongolia.
Featuring technologically advanced and original forms of art, the festival includes music, film, sound and food.
It also provides a forum for famous artists and scientists to meet with and speak to young emerging members of the same disciplines.
Apart from the festival, Ljubljana offers plenty to interest visitors, with Roman, baroque and art nouveau architecture, boat rides on the Ljubljanica river and a panoramic view across the city from the Castle tower.
The city also makes an excellent base to tour the country, with the Julian Alps, Maribor Forest and Adriatic Sea all major attractions.
Ljubljana has ample accommodation, including plenty of cheap hotels.
