South Africa
The Republic of South Africa is on the southern tip of the African continent bordering Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique Zimbabwe, and Swaziland. The coastline stretches more than 2500 kilometres and borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. With a population of over 46 million people there are 11 official languages, and 8 non-official languages still recognised by the country. It is difficult to recognise one single culture in South Africa due to its great ethnic diversity. In fact this diversity is enjoyed by all and food, music and dance feature prominently and are often especially marketed to tourists.
Since 1994 South Africa has been organised into 9 regions which are Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, The Free State, North West Province, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. The country can be split into 3 geographical regions, the plateau, mountains and the coastal belt. Inland of South Africa is greatly mountainous and sparsely populated and it is said that some of the most breathtaking landscapes, canyons, cliffs and wilderness can be found here. The North West is the driest area alongside the Kalahari desert where as the opposite eastern coastline is lush with a tropical climate. Despite the Limpopo and Orange major river systems, the plateau lacks surface water.
South Africa is rich in biodiversity and this can particularly be seen particularly on the Highveld. The Fynboz Biome is one of several floral kingdoms. It can be found in Western Cape and contains nearly half of the 20,000 different plant species that can be found in South Africa making it one of the richest regions. Vegetation becomes sparse towards the Northwest due to climate conditions. In bushveld habitats lions, leopards, rhinos, wildebeest, kudus, impalas and giraffes can be found. Most of the bushveld habitat areas and National Park Reserves are in the Northeast of the country.
Some of the oldest African archaeological sites can be found in South Africa. Fossil remains can be found at Makapansgat, Sterkfontein and Kromdraai caves.
